Mohandas Gandhi, Indian nationalist leader, on his way to Congress, 1932. Mohondas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), known as Mahatma (Great Soul), was one of the leaders of the campaign for Indian independence from British rule. A lifelong believer in the principle and practice of protest by non-violent means, he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in New Delhi on 30 January 1948.
