Mahatma Gandhi Memorial, Delhi, with an everlasting flame, 20th century. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948), known as Mahatma (Great Soul), was one of the leaders of the campaign for Indian independence from British rule. A lifelong believer in the principle and practice of protest by non-violent means, he was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic in New Delhi on 30 January 1948. The memorial stands on the site of his cremation.
