'Chatsworth in Derbyshire, The Seat of his Grace the Duke of Devonshire', 1775. The first house at Chatsworth was built by Bess of Hardwick (c1527-1608) and her second husband Sir William Cavendish (1505-57). Building began in 1552, and many additions and alterations were made over the years by its subsequent occupants.
