George Stuart White, British soldier, 1900. White (1835-1912) won the Victoria Cross (VC) in the 2nd Afghan War, 1879. Commander of Natal (1899-1900) during the 2nd Boer War, he defended Ladysmith through the 119-day siege from 1 November 1899 to 28 February 1900. He served as Governor of Gibraltar from 1900-1905, was made a Field Marshal in 1903 and was awarded the Order of Merit (OM) in 1905.
