Assassination of Elisabeth of Bavaria by Luigi Lucheni, 1898. Elisabeth (1837-1898) was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary as consort of Franz Joseph I whom she married in 1854. On 10 September 1898 she was stabbed through the heart by the Italian anarchist Lucheni (1873-1910) as she was about to board the steamer at Geneva to travel to Montreux. She was the mother of the Crown Prince Rudolph (1858-1889) who shot his lover Marie Vetsera then himself at Mayerling, his hunting lodge, in 1889. From Le Petit Journal (Paris, 25 September 1898).
