Marie Edme Patrice Maurice MacMahon, Duc de Magenta, French soldier and statesman, c1880. Of Irish descent, MacMahon (1808-1893) was the commander of the French army defeated by the Prussians at the Battle of Sedan in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870.
