Jean Henri Dunant, Swiss philanthropist, 1902. Dunant (1828-1910) inspired the foundation of the International Red Cross after the Battle of Solferino (1859) and instigated the conference which formulated the Geneva Convention (1864). In 1901 he shared the first Nobel prize for peace with the French economist and writer Frederic Passy.
