Samuel Whitbread, English politician, 19th century. Whitbread (1758-1815), a member of the successful brewing family, campaigned for the abolition of slavery, and was a proponent of a national education system. In 1815 Whitbread began to suffer from depression, and in June of that year he committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor.
