The Stamp Riots of New York, c1765, (1872). A banner reads: The Folly of England and the Right of America. The Stamp Act was passed by the British Parliament in 1765 in order to raise revenue in the American colonies. Opposition to the Act led to the rise of American nationalist sentiment. Resulting conflict between the colonists and the British government was one of the causes of the American Revolution.
