Samuel Peter Heintzelman, US Army General, 1872. Heintzelman (1805-1880) served in the Seminole War, the Mexican War, the Cortina Troubles, and the American Civil War, where he commanded the III Corps of the Union Army in the Peninsular Campaign and at Second Bull Run. Relieved of his command in late 1862, he later commanded XXII Corps, assigned to the defense of Washington, DC, where he remained for the remainder of the war.
