Karl Wilhelm Siemens, German engineer and pioneer of electrical power, (c1924). Siemens (also known as Charles William Siemens, 1823-1883) trained as a mechanical engineer, and after emigrating to England directed the English branch of the firm of Siemens & Halske. He is most famous for developing the open-hearth furnace, (patented in 1856) and which was later applied to steel manufacture.
