Lectern, c15th century?, (1843). This item was dragged out of the lake at Newstead c 1750. It is believed to have been thrown into the lake at the time when the dissolution of the monasteries was first threatened. It was made of brass and composed of several pieces; the boss was found to contain parchments. It would have been used to read the litany in the chapel of Newstead Abbey. Illustration from Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, by Henry Shaw, (London, 1843).
