Tobit, c1470, (1843). Tobit, blind and sick, has just dispatched his son Tobias to the city of Rages. The woman cooking is his wife Anna. She is using a jack to hang the pot over the fire. God tested Tobit and Anna by reducing them to poverty and causing Tobit's blindness. They were held up as examples of piety in adversity. From a French translation by Guiart de Moulins, of the Historia Scolastica of Peter Comestor. Illustration from Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, by Henry Shaw, (London, 1843).
