Court dress, 14th century, (1843). Courtiers of the time of Richard II (1367-1400). The two first figures are taken from a manuscript page from the Song of Solomon. During this period the edges of the sleeves, hoods etc were punched and dagged (cut in shreds) into the form of leaves. The lower figures are portraits of a Gascon knight and the author paying his respects to the knight who had sent for him to accompany him to England; neither name is known. Illustration from Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, by Henry Shaw, (London, 1843).
