Court dress, 14th century, (1843). Courtiers of the time of Richard II (1367-1400). During this period the edges of the sleeves, hoods etc were punched and dagged (cut in shreds) into the form of leaves. The figures are portraits of a Gascon knight and the author paying his respects to the knight who had sent for him to accompany him to England; neither name is known. Illustration from Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, by Henry Shaw, (London, 1843).
