'Quickly pulling off his cloak he threw it upon the ground', 1581, (1905). Walter Raleigh performs an act of gallantry; he puts his cloak over a muddy puddle so that Queen Elizabeth I can avoid muddying her shoes. Illustration from Our Island Story by H E Marshall, published by T C & E C Jack Ltd, (London and Edinburgh, 1905). The book gave a very biased and pro-British view of history.
