'Mutual Accommodation', 1860. This cartoon illustrates the argument taking place between France, represented here by Madame La Banque on the left, and Britain in the shape of the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street on the right. It appears that France had been engaged in creating an artificial run on British gold reserves. Eventually, though, a 'mutual accommodation' was reached whereby Britain made a loan of £2m in gold upon receiving a deposit of the same sum in silver from France. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 1, 1860.
