'Probable Effect of Mr.Somes's Sunday Closing Bill', 1863. Workman says: Well, Betsy, If They Won't Let Us Get Any Refreshment O'Sunday Out O'Doors - We Must Lay In A Stock, And Drink At Home, Like The Pious Scotch! The MP, Mr Somes, introduced a Bill that proposed that all public houses should be closed all day Sunday. Resistance came from both 'patrician champagne and plebian beer'. Here, Mr Punch points out the absurdity of the proposal. Those wishing to have a drink on Sunday will always find a way. The Bill was defeated on the second reading . From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 28, 1863.
