'Papers! Papers! Papers!', 1864. John Russell says: Please, My Lord, Them Toris Would Be Much Obleeged for Papers. Lord Palmerston replies: Papers! Haven't They Got The Standard and the Herald. What More Papers Can They Want? This cartoon depicts the little footman, Russell, asking the master of the house, Palmerston, if he can give the papers to the Tories (represented by Disraeli lurking outside the door). Palmerston asks why they want more papers as they already have the Herald and the Standard. The Standard in particular was a very firm supporter of the Conservative Party. At the time the very confusing Schleswig-Holstein issue came to prominence, Lord Russell was Foreign Secretary. Russell's poor handling of the situation had caused fierce attacks to be made against in the House by Disraeli and other members of the opposition. From Punch, or the London Charivari, 1864.
