'The Late Rain', 1865. Two gentlemen hitch their trousers up before attempting to cross the road. Many of London's streets remained unpaved at this time. In addition, a lack of gutters and the dirt of man and horse tended to compound the problem. In wet weather, the roads could become almost impassable, as shown in this cartoon.
