'The Yankee Fireman keeps his Word', 1866. President Andrew Johnson (who had taken office on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln), in his fireman's helmet, and stars and stripes uniform, is seen turning the hose on the invading troops whilst Miss Canada shows her ability to handle the firearms. At the beginning of April 1866, the American branch of the Irish Fenian movement had crossed the border into Canada as the first step in their plan to invade that country. The American government had promised to cooperate in quashing the plot. From Punch, or the London Charivari, June 30, 1866.
