'Germany's Ally', 1870. Famine is shown spreading its hands over Paris as she weeps by the city's defences. France had declared war on Prussia, but had been defeated on almost every front. The Emperor Napoleon was in Prussian custody, and Prussia now had Paris virtually under siege. The people were beginning to starve. This was a particularly important war as it enabled the final unification of Germany. The famine in Paris was the newly formed Germany's ally. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 10, 1870.
