'Education', 1872. The Squire is told why his farmworker's child has been withdrawn from school. Whilst much had been done to promote the value of educating children, with new school boards set up to manage increased funding that came through after the Education Act of 1870, schooling was not yet compulsory for all children and parents, especially those to whom the financial value of their children was important. Parents were still free to keep their children away from school for a variety of reasons, as this cartoon points out. From Punch, or the London Charivari, August 7, 1872.
