'A Hitch', 1874. The traffic manager receives with annoyance the station master's report. There was growing disquiet at the number of accidents that happened each year on Britain's railway network. Many of these were blamed on inadequate investment in signalling and other necessities. Instead, the directors were pocketing fat profits. Meanwhile, accidents continued to be an everyday occurrence. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 10, 1874.
