'Home-(Rule)-Opathy', 1874. Mr Isaac Butt, the moderate leader of the Irish Home Rule Party opens a box labelled Home Rule. Ireland sits by her small fire with her meagre possessions on a stool beside her. This relates to the introduction of a motion by Mr Butt calling for Home Rule in Ireland, and this was debated at the beginning of July 1874. Mr Bull, the representative in Punch of the British people, held the view that Britain might legitimately pursue peace and freedom from Irish troubles by allowing Home Rule. However, duty to Ireland meant that the United Kingdom should remain united and, although Mr Butt spoke eloquently for his motion, it was the right result, in Punch's opinion, that the motion was in the end comprehensively defeated. From Punch, or the London Charivari, July 11, 1874.
