'The Bow of Ulysses, 1875. The Liberal opposition had to choose a new leader following Mr Gladstone's resignation from office following the Liberal defeat in the General Election of 1874. The principal candidates are shown in this cartoon. They are Lord Hartington, Mr William Forster (holding the bow), Mr George Goschen, Mr Robert Lowe (second left) and Sir William Harcourt. Punch printed this cartoon before news arrived that Mr Forster had declined candidature. The meeting was held at the Reform Club and was presided over by Mr John Bright. Eventually, Lord Spencer Compton Cavendish was selected as leader of the Liberal Party. Lord Granville became the leader in the Lords. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 6, 1875.
