'Performer and Critic', 1879. Mr Gladstone performs an intricate figure on the ice, whilst Lord Beaconsfield, the Conservative Prime Minister, watches from the shore of the lake. In the background, sweepers suggest the Scottish sport of curling. This cartoon relates to the forthcoming General Election. Mr Gladstone had made an energetic start to his campaign, and had just completed a tour of speech-making in Scotland. Immediately after leaving Scotland, he stopped off to campaign in Carlisle, Preston, Wigan, Warrington and Chester. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 20, 1879.
