'A Common Sorrow', 1881. Britannia comforts America after the death of the President on the 19th September 1881. James A Garfield was shot and severely wounded at the beginning of July 1881 by a man named Charles Guiteau who was a supporter of the Republican party. Guiteau was eventually executed, but the President lingered for more than two months before eventually dying from his wounds. From Punch, or the London Charivari, October 1, 1881.
