A New Departure, 1882. The Chief Secretary for Ireland, William Forster, resigns from his office in Mr Gladstone's Liberal government. This happened because he was unable to accept that Gladstone had been engaging in talks with Charles Parnell of the Irish Nationalist Party without even informing him, let alone involving him. Gladstone had been trying to reach an agreement whereby he would arrange for Parnell to be released from prison where he had been languishing for some weeks after his arrest for breaching the recent coercion legislation. In return, Parnell would endeavour to ensure the success of Gladstone's hard won Land Act. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 13, 1882.
