'The Modern Caesar', 1882. Sir Garnet Wolseley is depicted as the Modern Caesar in this cartoon. Following the uprising in Egypt and the recent agreement that six European powers should protect the operation of the Suez Canal, the first contingent of British troops had reached Alexandria. Sir Garnet was the chief commander and rapidly gained a reputation for energy and resourcefulness. The companion cartoon of the 23rd September 1882 is simply entitled 'Vici!'. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 9, 1882.
