'Sending Round the Hat', 1887. John Bull, the representative of the British people, opens his purse to make a donation to the Church of England. In Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee Year, it had been proposed that a new Church House should be built in honour of the Established Church. Subscriptions were solicited, although, given the terrible poverty of many of the minor clergy of the Church of England, the scheme faced much criticism. From Punch, or the London Charivari, March 12, 1887.
