Remember!, 1888. John Bull, the representative of the British people, looks at a map to find out the location of Suakin (Sudan). In the background, the ghost of General Gordon warns that if Britain is to continue to intervene to protect British interests in Sudan as a result of continuing trouble in that country, then it were best done soon. This draws on previous troubles earlier in the decade when Gordon had been sent to the Sudan. After he had been cut off, the relief party was not sent soon enough to save his life. The problems of Sudan were not resolved until 1899. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 15, 1888.
