The Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem, built 685-69. The oldest existing Muslim monument, built 685-691 as a shrine for pilgrims (a mashhad). The Rock sacred to Muslims as site from which Muhammad ascended to heaven, and to Jews as place where Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac.
