Dr Roussell of Geneva giving a woman a direct blood transfusion from a volunteer, 7 February 1882. After the birth of premature twins in December 1881, the patient became increasingly weak and a transfusion was tried as last resort. By 13 February she was up, and well on the way to making a full recovery
