Georgius Agricola (1494-1555), German physician, mineralogist and metallurgist, 1881. Agricola (christened Georg Bauer) was the author of De re metallica (Basel, 1555), an early treatise on mining and metallurgy which remained a standard text on the subject for the next 200 years. He is pictured using a geologist's hammer.
