William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst of Arracan (1773-1857), British statesman. Pitt was sent as Ambassador to China in 1816, but as he refused to perform the ceremony of kow-tow, which Europeans considered degrading, he was not permitted to enter Peking.
