Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong (c1898-1971), American jazz trumpeter and singer. Armstrong was a major influence on the development of jazz as a popular form of music in the 1920s. A virtuoso performer on the trumpet or as a vocalist, he was instrumental in the growth in importance of the soloist in jazz. His nickname of Satchmo was short for 'Satchelmouth', a reference to the large size of his mouth.
