Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), British poet, critic and educationalist, 1881. He was the eldest son of Thomas Arnold, headmaster of Rugby School. The modern cultural meaning of the term 'Philistine' derives from one of Arnold's works, Culture and Anarchy. He is depicted in Classical garb, playing a stringed musical instrument. From the 'Fancy Portraits' series published in Punch, London, 1881.
