Long exposure of star field showing track of the asteroid Sappho against points of stars, 1892. Sappho's location is identified by the arrows at the top and the left edges of the picture. On a long exposure, an asteroid shows up as a streak as it is moving relative to the surrounding stars. Sappho was first discovered in May 1864 by Pogson.
