Pope Innocent IV. Artist: Unknown

1-152-463 - Ann Ronan Picture Library/Heritage-Images

Pope Innocent IV. Born Sinibaldo Fieschi, Innocent IV was Pope from 1243 until 1254. His belief in the universal dominion of the Papacy clashed with the aim of the excommunicated Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II to expand Imperial power in Italy at the expense of the Church. Depiction from the initial letter of an illuminated manuscript kept in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.
