William Herschel's 20ft telescope erected at Feldhausen, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, 1834-1838 (1847). This telescope was used by Herschel's son John during his expedition to catalogue the southern stars. Between 1834 and 1838, John Herschel made the first detailed survey of the night skies of the Southern Hemisphere, cataloguing thousands of celestial objects.
