William Bartram (1739-1823), American naturalist, 1896. He was the son of the botanist John Bartram (1699-1777), regarded as the 'Father of American Botany'. In 1773, William set off on a four year journey through eight of the southern American colonies. He recorded the fauna and flora he saw on the trip as well as the activities of Native American peoples he encountered, publishing his journal under the title of Travels in 1791.
