St Thomas Aquinas (c1225-1274), Italian philosopher and theologian. Thomas Aquinas joined the Dominican order and studied under Albertus Magnus at Cologne. He wrote commentaries on Aristotle and is regarded by the Catholic church as its greatest theologian. He is depicted holding an open book, while on his shoulder sits the dove of the Holy Spirit.
