Volcano on the island of Thera (Santorini) in eruption, 1866. The horseshoe shape of the island was created during a cataclysmic eruption c1500 BC. The ancient eruption may have created a tidal wave which destroyed the Minoan city of Knossos on Crete, and perhaps also gave rise to the legend of the lost continent of Atlantis.
