George Eliot, pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), English novelist, poet and critic, 1877. She chose a male nom de plume in order to improve her chances of publication and became a novelist of great stature. She was the author of Adam Bede, Silas Marner, The Mill on the Floss, Romola, Felix Holt, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda, amongst others.
