Aftermath of a German bombing raid, Merseyside, World War II, March 1941. Rescue workers searching for survivors in the wreckage of buildings after a Luftwaffe air raid. Owing to the importance of its docks, Liverpool was one of the main targets of the German bombing campaign in World War II. Between August 1940 and January 1942 over 4000 people were killed on Merseyside and over 10,000 homes were destroyed by air raids.
