Scene from Shakespeare's The Tempest, 1856-1858. Prospero, holding his daughter Miranda, regards Caliban, a savage, deformed, sub-human creature, whom he has enslaved. The play was first performed c1611. Illustration by John Gilbert (1817-1897) for an edition of Shakespeare's works published in 1856-1858.
