Battle of Alma, Crimean War, 20 September 1854 (c1860). French commanders with advancing infantry. 26,000 British troops commanded by Lord Raglan and 24,000 French under St Arnaud were victorious over Menshikov's Russian army at Alma. The victory opened the way for the British and French to advance on Sevastopol.
