The coffins of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and Archduchess Sophie lying in state, 1914. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand (1863-1914), heir to the Austrian throne, and the Archduchess Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo on 1914 by a Serbian nationalist, Gavrilo Princip. The assassination set Europe firmly on the road to the First World War.
