Hiroshima, Japan, after the dropping of the atom bomb in August 1945. On 6 August 1945, a United States Air Force B-29 bomber, codenamed 'Enola Gay' dropped the first atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima. Some 80,000 people were killed immediately and a further 60,000 died later from radiation sickness and other after effects. The utter devastation of the city is clearly visible in this photograph.
